Incision and Drainage of Abscess

During the incision and drainage procedure, our healthcare providers will begin by administering a local anesthetic to numb the area surrounding the boil or abscess. Once the anesthetic has taken effect and the area is devoid of pain sensation, they will use a scalpel to create a small incision in the skin over the infected area, allowing the pus to be drained.

In some cases, certain abscesses may necessitate multiple punctures, as there could be more than one pocket of pus. For larger or deeper abscesses, our providers may insert packing material into the wound to keep it open, facilitating continuous drainage as the healing process progresses.

Typically, the entire procedure takes less than an hour to complete, and complications are usually mild, if any. However, should you experience any bleeding, pain, or scarring after the procedure, we recommend seeking additional medical attention. Please don’t hesitate to contact our office if you encounter any problems or have any concerns. Your well-being is our priority, and we’re here to help.
